I.     Palestinian Judaism

·       Little known; Josephus the main source

·       priests the focal point of Jewish power

Ø   Joshua (Haggai, Zechariah)

Ø   Joiakim

Ø   Eliashab (time of Nehemiah)

Ø   Joiada

Ø   Johanan (mentioned in Elephantine Papyri)

Ø   Jaddua (legend of him meeting Alexander the Great)

·       Tobit perhaps written in this period

 

II.  Egyptian Judaism

·       Origins go back at least to Babylonian captivity and the time of Jeremiah (ca 586BC)

·       Temple at Elephantine, probably dating back to the 6th century BC, with sacrifices and all

·       Also a Jewish military colony on that island

·       Temple destroyed in 410BC by competitive Egyptian priests

·       Temple probably rebuilt thereafter

·       Elephantine papyri

Ø   in Aramaic

Ø   oldest Jewish texts we have outside of O.T.

Ø   indicate Jewish worship at time was syncretistic

Ø   oldest version of story of Ahiqar

 

III. Persian/Babylonian Judaism (it continues)
