Jardine Text--Journaling III… part to end "Longer Journeys"

JOURNALING QUESTIONS FOR BEYOND BACKPACKING BY RAY JARDINE
è HAND WRITE your answers to the following questions on paper and deliver to Coach D's office by the due date.  10% off for each day late

NOTE: This part of the text will apply to fewer of us in the class… the journaling is thus easier.  However, if you seriously are considering a month or longer trek in the future, you'll want to more seriously consider this section.

SECTION 4-- LONGER JOURNEYS

421-423: FORGING DREAMS INTO GOALS

--Find a lesson for all of life in these metaphors:

     "Electricity without wires"

   "Dispersed campfire coals."

424- 428: FINANCING THE JOURNEY

--Find five ideas in this chapter on how to finance a month-long or summer-long trek.

429-439 RESUPPLY

--Where would you send resupply packages?

--What would you send to a resupply point?

--What special label handling would you use?

--What is a "drift box?"

--What is Jardine's "Layover philosophy?" that radically differs from many hikers?

440-446 PARTNERS

--from this chapter make a list of "tips or cautions" on who you might hike with on a long trek.

447-448 TRAIL SHOCK

--What is "trail shock?"

449-452                      HIKING ENJOYMENT

--This is a KEY chapter--even for shorter hikes… make five "rules" or "Reminders" to yourself from it or adding to his.

54-455 THE POWER OF FOCUS

--Summarize this chapter in a  single sentence. (applies to so much else in life!)

456-464 SUPERCHARGING MILEAGE

--A critical philosophy of Jardine-- walking farther.  Turn this chapter into a LIST or CODE to get more mileage.

465-466 THE ARTISTRY OF HIKING

--What the dickens does backpacking have to do with "artistry?"

 466-468 RE-ENTRY

--List 2-3 tips on "spashdown."

SECTION 5--BACK TO BASICS

472-501 SEWING YOUR OWN GEAR

--Page through the pictures and simply list TWO things you "might" some day consider sewing for yourself.  Being a poor college student sewing equipment makes sense--you have more time than money.  Just write the two "possibilities" you might consider making someday.

502-503 SEAM SEALING

--Read this carefully--it is the #1 mistake people make with tents and other "waterproof" materials.  Write out the RULES you will always follow on seams of tents & etc.

504-510 GEAR LIST

--OK, here's your chance to make your own gear list--the hike is coming up soon… make your own checklist now… based on theirs and Coach D's class list--just paste it in here… you need a list to start with at least…

511-513                      POKING AT THE EMBERS

--Pretend you know nothing whatsoever about Ray Jardine's personal faith as you read this chapter.  Now make a continuum that reflects what could be his faith from reading this chapter… on one end put the broadest most liberal possible statement reflecting his possible personal faith.  On the other end put a statement reflecting the most conservative possible faith he might have and still be able to write this chapter.  Now, given only this information what do you think about Ray Jardine's personal faith?

Answer the above question before reading the following.

—go back now and answer the above question first.

Then come back and read this and answer the final question.

FINAL QUESTION:  Is this final chapter of an earlier edition any different than you later edition?  If so how would it make you answer the last question any differently?  How would you explain the difference?
